Scraphappy Saturday!

Today is the last Saturday of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, and I finally feel like I am getting my groove back.  First, I had to find my room! It had become a dumping ground long before Christmas, and I only had enough room to sew some of those last minute finishes. More on that in an upcoming post!

Last week, I finally was able to start tackling my scraps. I thought this was all I was going to accomplish for the month:

Garlic Knots by Bonnie Hunter (not a free patern)

But then my best friend gifted me with her leftovers from a project, which just happened to include red (we have a deal - she agreed not to throw out her scraps, and I'll let her pick through my stash when she needs something):

And this morning I started cutting down the smaller pieces to fit in my scrap-user's system, and made one more block (in just 15 minutes!)

Then I filed everything away in my scrappy block box. I call it Crummy Monday because I used to tackle all my scraps created in a week on a Monday night, a habit I'd like to get back in to.

After adding my new blocks, I decided to document the progress I've made so far:

Polaroid Blocks - I'm not sure who started this trend, but here is a link to a great tutorial that demonstrates the way I make them when I have a lot of blocks to do.

I'm also committing to posting more, for my own benefit. Here are some future posts I have planned:

What I can accomplish is just 15 minutes

 Have a great week,

Scrappy Saturday

Day 1 of the Olympics and Canada already has one of each medal!  Go, Canada!

While I was watching the women's moguls, I started clearing out some of the scrap buckets.  Each time I came across pink, I made a Boxy Star.

I actually made some practice ones last night, these go so fast.  Four of the large ones together make an 12" block:

Excuse the bottom right one - it's upside down!  I also re-calculated the design to make use of 2" strips, I couldn't waste those!

Of course, this is another Bonnie Hunter pattern - she has scads of them on her website for free.

Cutting my scraps into The Scrap User System meant I also generated strings.  Since I'm working with pink this month for So Scrappy's Rainbow Challenge, instead of adding my pink strings to the bulging bag, I made string blocks that will eventually become another Bonnie Hunter quilt, Zuckerwatte from her book, String Fling.

I just can't seem to get enough of her patterns.

I'll probably make baby quilts with these blocks, it seems there's an awful lot of babies being born this year, including a set of twins to friends of my daughters in June.

This is a long weekend in BC.  Last year, we got a new statutory holiday called "Family Day".  I'll probably spend it sewing since we might get snow or freezing rain.  Today the front moved in from the south quite dramatically.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge

This is my first time posting on soscrappy's Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I love using up my scraps, right down to the littlest crumbs, so this challenge is right up my alley.  The colour for the month of January is blue, and I have lots of those!

I've started by rummaging through my jar of cool-coloured crumbs:

I made one crummy block (3 1/2" unfinished):

I also added another house to my Tiny Houses collection (3 1/2" unfinished):

And a block to my Polaroid collection (3 1/2"x 4 1/2" unfinished):

(Not sure why the solid white looks wavy when I imported it into blogger, it looked fine on my computer!)

Next up, sort through my bin of scraps:

I'm too lazy to put everything away as I finish projects, so I stuff the leftovers in this bin and when I have a few minutes (i.e. bored, unmotivated, etc.) I pull it out and cut them into usable size strips and squares, a la Bonnie Hunter's Scrap User System.  I highly recommend it if you struggle with scraps!

Happy Scrapping,
